What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition where a fluid rich in protein collects in the tissue just below the skin. Lymphedema usually happens when the lymphatic system has been damaged or poorly developed from birth. If lymphedema occurs from damage to the lymphatic system due to surgery or cancer treatment is called secondary lymphedema. Unfortunately, from all cancers, breast cancer patients have the highest percentage of developing secondary lymphedema.

What is secondAry lymphedema?

Secondary lymphedema happens from damage to the lymphatic system due to surgery, radiation or trauma such as severe burns. The lymph nodes and/or vessels that have been damaged and/or removed cannot be replaced. Even though, there's recent research that shows lymph transplants have been successful on some patients, not all patients are candidate for transplant surgery.  Most patients that suffer from secondary lymphedema are cancer patients. The good news is therapy such as lymphedema massages, manual drainage and compression garments can maintain under control lots of the symptoms of lymphedema. Lymphedema requires maintenance for a lifetime. Compression garments will help during the transition from MLD therapy to home therapy management.

Compression sleeves are primarily used in cases of lymphoedema and lipedema. Lymphoedema can occur, for example, as a result of radiation treatment or breast surgery caused by damaged lymph vessels or missing lymph nodes. Furthermore, compression sleeves are used for preventative care in cases of vein problems and known risk factors indicating a thrombosis tendency. (JUZO sleeve pictured)
